When I'm bored with nothing to do, I might just post something here...and you might discover something cool. Most likely, you'll just discover another asshole with an opinion
I first heard these guys when I saw them open for Ted Leo and thought that they were really good. I've only got Here Comes Everyone, but it definitly gets a lot of play and I need to pick up some more of their stuff. I guess they're kinda known for using a vibraphone as a main instrument....but they're so much more than that. Anyway, great band. See them live. That video is kinda fuckin' gay and kinda cool at the same time.
Awesome band that no one has ever heard of. They broke up right around the time the album came out. I guess they used to be in Beachwood Sparks, I don't have any of their stuff but like what I've heard. Anyway, weird trippy rock...really good recommended for sure.
Probably the best pop-punk band around today. For some reason I have Crimson and Good Mourining and not the good stuff. Skiba used to write semi-serious songs about being pissed and drunk, and now he writes super serious songs about Goth things. I do have From here to Infirmary, which will have to do I guess. It seems like most people who like these guys are like super fanatical about them...I was never like that but I do really like a lot of the earlier jams. Saw them open up for the far superior Apocalypse Hoboken at the Metro once, and I was bored to death.
One of the first bands I ever really liked when I was just getting into music around 6th grade. I can only really listen to the MTV Unplugged album these days and got rid of the other stuff a long time ago, but the Unplugged is classic. What a beautiful performance. I think it was the first show they'd played in a few years because of Lanbe Staley's heroin problems. The guy just pours his heart out into every song. He was the AIC and Cantrell's solo stuff was weak.
Basically I could only find the grestest hits at this really shitty record store and really wanted to hear "I'm 18" so I spent $17 for that and a bunch of other bullshit I'll never listen to, including some shit pile called "I Never Cry" Eh? I'll keep "Wecome to My Nightmare" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy" and a few more.
What can you really say about the Reverend? I just wish I wasn't such a poser and had something besides the greatest hits album that everyone and their mom...let me re-phrase that...everyone's mom has. Classic, never gets old.
Only have Pocket Symphony and I don't play it much, but I could see getting really into it if the right situation came about so I'm kinda scared to get rid of it. I really like some of the bass parts and the song "One hell of a Party". I'd like to get more electronica stuff but never seem to think of it when I'm buying albums...maybe that's a sign?
Same deal as the Adolescents. I really early 80's west coast punk rock. These guys were always really kinda poppy and had a surf guitar sound to them that was original and helped them stand out. I think that if these guys came out today they'd be a lot bigger and but probably not as good. I remember one time, my friend showed up at the Wendy's where everyone hung out on a bike and we thought it would be funny if he sped up really fast to the people who were sitting outside Starbucks looking all scared. As soon as he stopped we flew around the corner blasting "Bloodstains" really loud and he took off on the bike as we speed after him in the car. People were supposed to be confused...anyway it seemed like the right song. And it was like 2000 and we were younger.
Another band I hardly listen to anymore, but still gotta keep because of the memories. Every once In awhile I do bust out the album and love it...definitly holds up. "Ameoba" kinda got ruined for me because of the Tony Hawk game, even though I've only ever played it once or twice I used to hear it at friends houses all the time, regardless what a classic song, and these dudes were like 17/ 18 when the recorded these jams. Crazy. I really like "Kids of the Black Hole" and "LA Girl"
Here is an enigma of a band. Everything about new AFI is fuckin' gay....look, tunes, Davey, etc. I never play them on my own anymore; however, when I hear older stuff, espicially "Black Sails..." I wanna crank it the fuck up. Luckily I never bought the newer shit so I'm content holding onto the old Misfits rip off shit and blasting it like I'm 16 every once in awhile. Good memories...burning their cd's for the ex-lady friend...a friend with an AFI tatoo who I'm sure regrets it now...seeing them at Warped in like '01 or so next to the BMX and skateborders
This band is creepy weird and slow as hell. I don't ever listen to the album, but I always thought that if I made a movie or something one day they would be a cool band to put on the soundtrack for a scene that is creepy, weird and slow. I will keep this, it will take up space, and I will probably never listen to it or use it in any way.
...Trail of Dead...I like a lot of what these guys do, I also don't like a lot of what these guys do. I buy their albums and tend to really only like...maybe half of it. Not essential by any means, but still cool once in awhile. Always thought the idea of them was cooler than the reality.
"A creative if menacing spirit looms over Denver like a carnival barker with a taste for life's dark lanes. His name is Munly, and he writes the haunted stories that are the backbone of his band's music"
"The first time in his career that Munly’s songs get their full due, Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots delivers all the Gothic shadows, classic western imagery and boot-scooting twang we’d expect from one of the Mile High City’s most renown Southern Gothic minstrels – and then some. Munly, you’ve finally become a full-blown creep. Congratulations."
Jay Munly is fucking awesome. He's from the Denver Gothic scene, which mixes folk, country, gothic, gospel and shit like that into one delectable stew of jams. He also plays and sings in Slim Cessena's Auto Club, who are cool in their own right, but for my money they don't hold a candle to the man himself. I wanna see this guy live so bad, he was supposed to play near me awhile back and canceled his tour cause he was sick or something. I was pretty bummed out. I can't really put into words how awesome Munly is, just buy the album and enjoy.
This guy is pretty cool. I've seen him live a couple of times, once opening for Mars Volta on their first tour, and once at Lolapalooza. Anyway, he was really fun to watch, cause he's doing something original....what it is I don't know. Like a weird poetry/ hip-hop thing?
I really love this band. There from Sweden and play like a garage rock/ early hardcore mix. And now because I'm too fuckin' lazy to rack my brain for my personal thoughts;
"C.AARMÉ's self-titled debut full-length is a dull-edged bludgeoning instrument, railing from right to left on one- and two-note basslines backed by barely in tune guitars."
"The recording (with aid from Division of Laura Lee's Per Stålberg) is perfectly disgusting, with barely any treble and a mess of middle ranges that makes the guitars and bass sound like a huge rubber band thrumming over the world's crappiest drum kit. In other words, it's perfect."
"Late album entries "Gag" and "Worst Part" are just as furious. Is Garon screaming "Hey knuckleheads" on the latter? Who knows. What matters is the song's relentlessly awesome, totally ragged thud. C.AARMÉ just might make slam dancing cool again." ------Allmusic.com Check out the first lines of "Golden Retrieiver;" If it goes on - like this, I will stick a spoon into me right eye/ And shut my left and slit my throat right off life off/ off life off/ s-s suicide/ s-s suicide / Golden Retriever / Golden Retriever
....what the fuck does that mean? I don't know, but it the dude sounds pissed about it.
Yea, so what can you really say about The Replacements? They were fucking amazing in every aspect. Early more punk rock stuff to later college rock stuff...it was all great. What a buch of fuck-ups too... all the drinking and drugs. Bob Stinson drank himself to death. Tommy Stinson is in GNR now I guess. Paul is making some pretty cool solo shit, and writing soundtracks for Disney movies...I don't know what to write...I'll copy and paste some Wikipedia stuff that sounds cool to me;
"The band turned up drunk to many of their legendary live shows, performing chaotic cover songs that revealed their love of classic rock. [1] Nonetheless, Trouser Press claimed that they were, "for a time, the world's greatest rock'n'roll band."
"During this time, they acquired an "anti-video" reputation. The video for "Bastards of Young" featured nothing more than a single shot of a speaker, while "The Ledge" (which MTV would not play on account of the lyrical themes) featured the band sitting around in a room with chairs and a sofa doing nothing in particular."
"The band was infamous for their rowdy, drunken shows. Sometimes the band would show up too drunk to play their own songs, and instead play covers, which they were also too drunk to play. It was not uncommon for them to play entire sets of covers, ranging anywhere from Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" to Dusty Springfield's "The Look of Love"
"There are few artists who can make self-loathing sound as arrogant or overconfident as Greg Dulli does, and chances are, he knows it."- Pitchfork
"the bulk of their career on the brink of stardom" -- they "never quite broke beyond a substantial legion of devotees enamored of their thinly veiled sleaze."- R.S. about the Afghan Whigs Greg Dulli seems to be one of those musicians that people either love or hate. I tend to fall into the former catagory. The Afghan Whigs were pretty badass most of the time, the Twilight Singers are badass most of the time, and I'm assuming that The Gutter Twins will be badass. 3 mostly badasses out of three has to equal like 2 and 3/4 badass, which is good enough for me.
He kinda comes off as an asshole in his lyrics, which is cool cause almost all his songs are about how he wants to have sex with some girl or do drugs and if you tired to be sensitive or whatever writing lyrics like that, it would be fucking lame.
Oh, and apparently he used to take half an hour cigarette breaks during shows...so that's cool.
"Ladies, let me tell you about myself -- I got a dick for a brain"
"Black out the windows/It's party time."
The Gutter Twins (Greg Dulli + Mark Lanegan) - Strangefruit
These gentlemen are from Texas and they kinda remind me a bit of the Jesus Lizard, which is especially apparrent in the excellent bass work. Their myspace cites their influences as Jesus Lizard, Fugazi, At the Drive-In, Drive Like Jehu and Nirvana, and it would seem to me that those are about the greatest influences any band could have. "In the Lines" was, what I believe to be their only recorded output, and it is really good.
"....it's so refreshing to know that a band like this still exists. We're giving them a '4' on principal." - Alternative Press
I couldn't agree more. So they broke up, and I'm not sure what the members are up to, but....I don't know how to end it
So, I dont know much about these guys outside of the fact that this album is fucking awesome. I guess they have guest vocalists on each album, and for this little gem the chose Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age, and solo album fame....oh, also Gutter Twins with Greg Dulli(which I for one am very much looking forward too) (back to back parenthesis, anyway, I sometimes wanna right Lanegan's recent output off as some sort of Tom Waits ripoff, but the more I listen to it the less I think that...and even if that is the case, Tom Waits kics ass, so why not rip him off a little). So here's a video for the song "revivial" i first heard this while I was listening to some BBC radio show online and falling asleep. I was almost asleep and this song just totally floored me and I had to find out who it was. The Video is also pretty cool looking. And guess what? I'll even throw in a link to there Myspace for you...how about that? Soulsavers Myspace Mark Lanegan Myspace- Decide for yourself
Any excuse for a little NormMacDonald is a good excuse if you ask me. Video starts out a little slow and seems kinda pointless, but wait til the end I swear it pays off. The man is a goddamn genius. Link to tons of Norm stuff, the Conan Appearances are really funny
I feel like in order to get this baby rolling, I've gotta post a bunch of shit. So anyway, I grew up listenting to these guys. They were kinda like "local legends" in the Chi-town area. Here's some clips from the reunion show last year. It was a really good time and if they have another one I suggest you go and have a good time for yourself.
Yea, so I really like these guys alot. I think most of it has to do with the guy's voice but also alot of the songs slowly build up to be almost anthemic in a weird way. For whatever reason when they came out I had no interest in them and than I heard "The Funeral" and it just got stuck in my head and I had to buy the album. When I got the album it wasn't as instantly likeable as that one song, but I kept finding myself playing it over and over again, and it definitly became one of my most listened to albums in a long time...it totally grows on you, and I still play it all the time. So they have new album coming out and here's the link to there Myspace were you can here it. It seems a little more down tempo, but I'm really liking it. Plus between the albums the dude let his beard get outta hand, which is always a plus because who doesn't like beard rock?
Something weird happened with the type on that last post...oh, well. Kinda seems like I got pumped about those lyrics and had to make them big or something. Uh, here's Louis CK, who is really funny. I hate it when people try and be funny when presenting something that's way funnier than them, like they're gonna add to it or something. So just imagine that I'm being really serious or something now.
I think this song is awesome. I'm white, and therefore not cool enough to talk about this guy like I actually know anything, but I know the album The B. Coming is awesome. I guess it was recorded right before he knew he was gonna go to jail for a couple of years for some kinda attempted murder charges or something. So apparently the whole album is mostly about that, which is cool because the reason I like hip-hop is the stories, and the stories in these songs are awesome. He pretty much lays out his whole legal situation and everything surrounding it in his life over the course of the album. This song especially amazes me. The whole feel of it, with the horns in the background and the background vocals create a really intense mood. This part;
" I know you cant, dont, wont get it You niggas chose to ride that ship, sunk with it Im still afloat, i aint tha captain of tha yacht but im on a boat I aint actin what im not Knowin that i dont, you niggas actin like you will but i know you wont, you wont I read between tha lines of ya eyes to ya brows Ya handshake aint matchin ya smile Ill holla, you niggas foul"
...is awesome. So the video is kinda cool and goes with the song well, but the real reason I posted it and not just the song is because it's easier to do, and the girl singing the backing vocals is named Melissa Jimenez, and she is fucking beautiful and has a really beautiful voice as well. So, there ya go...
I've been on a bit of a 90's rock kick lately, but I grew up in the 90's so why the hell not? It's kinda like how once I got a little bit older I realized that Groundhog Day is a hilarious movie. But I was like 8 when it came out, so I couldn't of cared less. So anyway, I like the Lemonheads. Mybe you'll agree with me? For some reason they kinda seem like a band that would be on Empire Records soundtrack or something like that. I guess that's bad or good depending on how you look at it. They got back together recently and I'm yet to hear their new album, but I've heard that it's good. Here's some videos of Evan Dando on Regis and Kathy Lee, than playing "It's a Shame About Ray Solo." Than there's the video for "My Drug Buddy." Both these songs are kinda slow, but they have way faster shit if you wanna look for that too.
